Château Mouton Rothschild: Discover the Legendary First Growth of Pauillac

Updated: Apr 11

The Legacy of Château Mouton Rothschild

Founded in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, Château Mouton Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious estates. Located in the Pauillac appellation on the Left Bank, it was originally classified as a Second Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. In a rare revision, it was elevated to Premier Cru Classé (First Growth) status in 1973, thanks to decades of innovation and excellence under Baron Philippe de Rothschild.

A Collector’s Wine and a Cultural Icon

Mouton Rothschild is more than a fine wine—it’s an artistic and cultural statement. Since 1945, each vintage has featured a unique label created by some of the world’s most influential artists, including Picasso, Chagall, Miró, Warhol, and Koons.

This marriage of wine and art has made Mouton Rothschild one of the most collectible wines globally, sought after by connoisseurs and art lovers alike.

What Does Château Mouton Rothschild Taste Like?

As a classic Pauillac red wine, Mouton Rothschild is built on the strength of Cabernet Sauvignon, with supporting roles played by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. In youth, expect intense notes of blackcurrant, tobacco, graphite, and spice. With age, it reveals complex layers of leather, cedar, and earthy minerality.

Known for its power and longevity, Mouton can age for decades, gaining depth and elegance over time.
